Why Isn't My Business Showing Up on Google in Troy, IL?

This is the question I get more than almost any other from owners around Troy and the Metro East. You have a website. You have a Google Business Profile. You do good work. And still, when you type what you do into Google, your competitor shows up and you don't. It's frustrating, and it usually points to one of a handful of specific problems rather than some mystery you can't fix.

Your Google Business Profile Might Be the Problem

For a local business, the map results at the top of Google are often where the actual clicks happen. If your profile is unclaimed, incomplete, or sitting with the wrong category, Google has very little reason to show it. I see profiles all the time with no photos, generic categories, hours that don't match the website, and no description of what the business actually does.

Start by claiming the profile if you haven't, then fill in every field. Pick the most specific category that fits, upload real photos of your work or location, write a clear description, and make sure your name, address, and phone number match exactly what's on your website. A complete, active profile is one of the strongest free signals you can send Google.

Your Service Pages Don't Tell Google Enough

A lot of businesses try to fit every service onto one page. The problem is that Google ranks pages, not websites. If you offer collision repair, paintless dent removal, and frame straightening, a single "Services" page makes it hard for Google to know which one to show when someone searches for just one of those things.

Each important service deserves its own page with a clear heading, a real description of what's involved, and a way to take the next step. That gives Google a clear target to rank. If you want a deeper look at how this works, our local search optimization breaks down how service pages and visibility connect.

Your Business Information Doesn't Match Everywhere

Google cross-checks your business name, address, and phone number across your website, your Google Business Profile, and online directories. If your website lists one phone number, your profile lists another, and Yelp has a third, Google loses confidence in which one is correct. Inconsistent information is one of the most common reasons a business quietly drops out of local results.

Pick one version of your name, address, and phone number and use it everywhere. It sounds boring, but it matters. Check your website, your Google profile, and any directories where you're listed, and make them match exactly.

Google Might Not Be Able to Read Your Site

Sometimes the issue isn't content, it's access. If your site is built in a way that blocks Google from crawling it, or if important pages aren't indexed, you can have the best service pages in the world and they'll never show up. This can happen after a site rebuild, a domain change, or a robots.txt file that's set up incorrectly.

Google Search Console will tell you which pages are indexed and which aren't. If a page you care about isn't there, that's a technical signal worth investigating before you write any more content.

You Don't Have Enough Recent Reviews

Reviews are a trust signal for both customers and Google. The businesses that consistently appear at the top of local results almost always have a steady stream of recent reviews, not a handful from three years ago. A profile with four reviews is going to have a harder time than one with forty.

The simplest fix is to ask every happy customer for a review and send them a direct link so it takes thirty seconds. If you want that ask to happen automatically after every job, our review request system handles exactly that.

You Might Be Targeting Searches That Are Too Competitive

Sometimes the honest answer is that the search you want is genuinely hard to win. A brand-new site competing against established businesses with hundreds of reviews and years of content isn't going to show up overnight. That doesn't mean you can't get there, but it means the path is through focused, specific service pages and consistent local signals rather than chasing the broadest term in your industry.

Look at what's actually ranking for the search you want. If every result is a large competitor with deep content, start with the more specific version of that search where you have a realistic chance to compete.

Where to Actually Start

Don't try to fix everything at once. Run through the free marketing checklist and check off what you already have handled. Most businesses find that their biggest gap is either an incomplete Google Business Profile or a website that doesn't have clear, separate service pages. Fix one thing, then move to the next.
